This workshop uses flying monkeys, pigs and chickens along with chemical reactions to explore the wonders of cannons and rockets. The children engage in 3 to 4 separate activities that allow them to actively experience the power of cannons while learning about vortex rings and pressure, chemical reactions, launch angle and crazy cannons while changing variables to maximise launch height….. and not to mention …..having a BLAST!

a) Flying Animals illustrate how projectiles work!

  • How a projectile flies through the air is explained by using toys that engage and allow kids to explore factors that affect launch height before they fire cannons.
  • The children use monkeys, pigs, cows, chickens, frogs and ducks to explore elastic potential energy, projectile paths through the air and how launch angles affect distance travelled. Innovative and FUN!

b) Rocket Balloons

  • Children examine Newton’s Third Law and pressure while inflating rocket balloons and racing them across the yard.
  • They also learn about noise, pressure and motion.

b) Crazy Film Canister Rockets 

  • Children use specifically designed film canisters to examine how changing the amount of vinegar affects the launch height of the rockets.
  • Great FUN and way to learn rocket science.

c) Pulsating Air Vortex Cannons 

  • Multiple air cannons are used to show the kids the power of air vortex rings.
  • In teams they use air power, cannon knowledge to pulverise cup pyramids.

d) Launch angle Cannons

  • The children explore how the angle of a cannon affects the distance travelled (launch angle)
  • They compete in teams with their own film canister cannon to see who can make their cannon fire the furthest. Fun, SAFE and educational!
