There are no batteries and no motor. Just a marble hidden inside.
Professor Picklebottom has a question:

Build Your Bean Tube

Wrap a rectangle of aluminium foil around a thick marker to make a tube.
Slide the foil tube carefully off the marker.

Seal One End

Fold and press one end of the foil tube closed.
Make sure the end is sealed, but don’t squash the whole tube.

Add Your Marble

Choose the medium marble for your first bean.
Drop it inside the foil tube.
Don’t squash the tube — the marble needs room to move!

Seal Your Bean

Fold and press the open end closed.
Your marble should now be trapped inside the tube but still able to roll from end to end.
Can you hear it move when you gently tilt the bean?

Shape Your Bean

Place your bean inside a plastic container.
Put the lid on and shake it for about 10–15 seconds.
The marble bumps against the foil from the inside, helping shape and strengthen your bean.
Take it out and have a look.
Your Crazy Jumping Bean is ready!

Have you ever carried a drink and felt it slosh around inside the bottle?
Even when you stop moving, the liquid inside can keep moving. The same thing can happen with objects hidden inside other objects.
Your jumping bean has something hiding inside too — a marble that can roll, bump and change the movement of the whole bean.
But here's the mystery...
Could changing the SIZE of that hidden marble change the way the bean moves?
Today, you'll build a crazy jumping bean and find out.

Before anyone explained why your Crazy Jumping Bean moved...
You investigated it yourself.
You made a prediction.
You watched it roll, wobble and flip.
You tested different-sized marbles.
You kept other parts of your test the same.
You repeated your tests.
You compared what happened.
With every test, you collected another piece of evidence.
You weren't just making a jumping bean.
You were investigating how changing one part of a system can affect the way the whole system behaves.
Now it's time to use your evidence to uncover the science.

Your investigation showed that changing something INSIDE an object can change how the whole object moves.
Now take that idea somewhere new.
Imagine...
A delivery truck has a heavy box that can slide around in the back.
What might happen when the truck suddenly turns?A ship carries thousands of litres of liquid in a partly filled tank.
What might happen as the liquid moves from side to side?Your school bag has a heavy drink bottle rolling around inside.
How might that change the way the bag feels as you run?
These situations look very different from your jumping bean...
but is the same BIG IDEA hiding inside them?

Scientists don't stop after their first discovery.
They ask new questions, collect more evidence and test their ideas in different ways.
Where could you take this investigation next?

Why Does Your Crazy Bean Move Like That?
There’s no motor hiding inside your Crazy Bean — just a marble, gravity and forces.
When you give the bean a gentle push, the marble inside begins to move. As the bean tips, gravity pulls the marble towards the lower end.
Then — BUMP!
The marble reaches the end of the bean and pushes against the foil. This shifts where the bean’s weight is and can make the whole bean tip, flip or change direction.
Why Does It Keep Flipping?
As the bean flips onto its other end, the marble rolls again.
The weight shifts.
The bean tips.
The marble moves again.
That repeating movement is what gives your Crazy Bean its strange, almost lifelike motion.
What Did Marble Size Change?
In your investigation, you changed the size of the marble while trying to keep the rest of the bean the same.
Different-sized marbles can also have different masses. A marble with more mass can produce a different effect when it rolls and bumps into the end of the bean.
But your results are the important part.
What did YOUR evidence show?
Did one marble make the bean:
flip more often?
travel further?
change direction more?
move faster or slower?
Scientists don't just say what they think should happen — they use observations and evidence to explain what actually happened.
The Big Science Idea
Your Crazy Bean moves because forces change motion.
Gravity moves the marble inside.
The marble pushes against the bean.
The surface pushes back on the bean.
Friction affects how it moves across the surface.
And because the marble is constantly moving inside, the forces acting on the bean keep changing.
That tiny marble turns a simple foil tube into a surprisingly complicated moving system!
