Have you ever watched a waiter carry a huge tray full of drinks using just one hand?
It looks almost impossible! If they hold the tray in the wrong place, the glasses could tip over and crash to the floor.
So how do they know exactly where to hold it?
Before you investigate, think about other things you've balanced. Have you ever balanced a ruler, a broom or even a pencil on one finger?
Maybe those objects have a "magic spot" too...

Time to investigate!
Start by finding the balance point of a fork.
Next, add some Play-Doh to one end and see what changes.
Can you predict what will happen before you test it?
As you investigate, keep asking yourself:
What changes when I move the weight?
Every clue you discover will help you solve the final balancing challenge.

So... what did you discover?
By changing where the weight was placed, you changed where the fork balanced.
Now it's time to become the engineer!
Can you use everything you've learned to build a balancing fork sculpture that stays on the edge of a glass?
Just like a waiter carrying a tray full of drinks, success isn't about strength...
It's about finding the perfect balance.

Scientists don't stop after their first discovery.
They ask new questions, collect more evidence and test their ideas in different ways.
Where could you take this investigation next?
What happens if you change the amount of Play-Doh on the fork?
Can you balance different kitchen utensils, such as spoons, knives or different-sized forks?

Why did the fork balance?
Every object has a centre of mass — a point where its mass is balanced around.
Because a fork is not the same shape or thickness all the way along, its centre of mass may not be exactly where you expect.
When you balanced the fork on your finger, you were searching for its balance point.
What happened when you added Play-Doh?
Adding Play-Doh changed where the fork's mass was located.
When you moved the Play-Doh, the balance point moved too. Changing the amount of Play-Doh could make an even bigger difference.
You discovered an important rule:
Balance depends not only on how much mass there is, but also on where that mass is positioned.
How can the fork sculpture balance on a glass?
When the two forks are joined together, their mass spreads out around the wooden skewer.
If everything is positioned in just the right place, the centre of mass of the whole sculpture allows it to balance on the tiny edge of the glass.
It might look impossible, but gravity is still pulling everything down towards Earth.
The secret is how all that mass has been arranged.
Can you change the balance?
Absolutely!
Moving the Play-Doh, changing its amount or adjusting the forks changes how the mass is distributed.
Sometimes a surprisingly small change is enough to make the sculpture tip over.
That's why scientists and engineers don't just think about how heavy something is — they also think about where its mass is located.

Weight
Weight is the force of gravity pulling an object towards the Earth. Heavier objects have more weight.
Balance Point
The balance point is the spot where an object can stay level without tipping over. It is sometimes called the centre of balance.
