Gather your materials and get

  • 2 clean eggshell halves

  • Cotton wool or cotton pads

  • Cress seeds

  • Water

  • 2 egg cups or a small egg carton

  • 1 paper cup

  • Scissors

  • Black marker

  • Sunny windowsill

  • Small tray or plate (to catch water)

  • Carefully crack the tops off two eggs. Empty and rinse the shells, then leave them to dry.

  • These eggshells are about to become your Plant Detectives!

Build Your Egg-heads

  • Place damp cotton wool inside both eggshells. 

  • Sprinkle cress seeds evenly over the top.

  •  Draw funny faces on your Egg-heads and give each one a name!

Set Up the Mystery

  • Place Egg-head A on a sunny windowsill.

  • Place Egg-head B inside a paper cup with a window cut into one side. Make sure the window faces the sunlight.

  • Only one thing should be different between your Egg-heads.

Watch for Clues

  • Add a little water each day. Look closely at both Egg-heads and record any changes.

  • Be patient—good scientists know that discoveries sometimes take time!

The Big Twist!

  • After about 5–7 days, carefully turn both Egg-heads around 180°.

  • Don't move the window.

  • Now wait another 2–3 days.

Solve the Mystery

  • Compare your Egg-heads one last time.

  • Did either one change direction?

  • Use all of your observations to decide what was really "pulling" the plants sideways.

Have you ever noticed that...

  •  flowers often face the Sun?

  •  pot plants on a windowsill lean towards the window?

  •  tiny seedlings seem to know which way to grow?

Nobody moves them.

Nobody tells them which way to go.

So...


Who keeps pulling plants sideways?


Today you'll investigate one of nature's biggest mysteries and discover whether plants can somehow "find" the light.

Before anyone explained how plants find sunlight...


you investigated it yourself.


You made predictions.

You compared two Egg-heads.

You changed only one variable.

You watched carefully over several days.

You collected evidence.


Every observation gave you another clue about what was really happening.

Now it's time to put those clues together and solve the mystery.

Your investigation revealed something surprising.


Both Egg-heads started growing...

but they didn't keep growing in the same direction.

When you turned them around...

their "hair" slowly bent towards the light again.

So what was happening?


Plants don't have eyes, but they can detect where light is coming from.

Inside the stem is a tiny plant hormone called auxin. When light shines from one side, auxin moves to the shaded side of the stem. The cells there grow a little longer, gently bending the plant towards the light.


Scientists call this amazing response phototropism.

You don't need to remember the name.


The important discovery is what you observed:

✔ Plants don't simply grow straight upwards.

✔ Plants can change the direction they grow.

✔ Light acts as a signal that helps plants find the best place to grow.


Just like a real scientist, you used evidence to solve the mystery.

Think Like a Scientist

Scientists don't just do ONE experiment; they change one part of the experiment (independent variable) and then see how it affects another part of the experiment

(dependent variable)

Change ONE variable and test again.

Does the colour of light affect the direction plants grow?

Can plants still find the light if only coloured light reaches them? Design a fair test to investigate.

Plants Don't See Light... They Feel It


Plants have special light-detecting cells inside their leaves and stems.

These cells don't form pictures like our eyes do, but they can tell which direction the brightest light is coming from.


As soon as a young shoot detects light on one side, it begins preparing to change direction.

It's almost like the plant is saying,

"The sunlight is over there... I'd better grow that way!"


The Secret Is Hidden Inside the Stem


The real magic happens inside the growing stem.

Plants make a tiny chemical messenger called auxin.

When light shines from one side, auxin moves to the shaded side of the stem.


The cells on the shaded side grow a little longer than the cells on the sunny side.

Because one side grows faster than the other, the whole stem slowly bends towards the light.

Scientists call this amazing response phototropism.


Why Is Finding Light So Important?


Plants don't grow towards light just because they "like" sunshine.

They need light to make their own food through photosynthesis.

The more sunlight they can collect, the more energy they have to grow new leaves, flowers and seeds.


For tiny seedlings growing beneath larger plants, finding even a small patch of sunlight can make the difference between surviving and dying.

That's why growing towards light is one of the most important survival skills a plant can have.
