Hair-Raising Science
Essy loves going to the playground.
One afternoon, after racing down the slippery slide over and over again, she noticed something strange.
When she reached the bottom, her hair was sticking up in every direction!
Then her friend reached out to help her up...
Zap!
They both felt a tiny electric shock.
Essy looked back at the slide.
"There aren't any batteries... there aren't any power cords... so where did the electricity come from?"
That question stayed in her mind all the way back to the Crazy Scientist LAB.
Professor Picklebottom smiled.
"I think we can build an investigation to find out."

Taken off a jumper and heard little crackling sounds?
Had a balloon stick to a wall after a party?
Seen someone else's hair suddenly float upwards?
Those strange things all happen because of the same invisible force.
Today you're going to investigate it yourself.

What did you discover?
When you rubbed the balloon, something invisible changed.
Without touching anything, the balloon could:
Lift hair.
Pull individual strands.
Make hair stand up.
You weren't using magnets.
You weren't using glue.
So...
What was pulling the hair?
Scientists call this invisible effect static electricity.

Where else have you seen this?
The same invisible force can happen in everyday life.

They're all caused by static electricity.

Scientists don't stop after their first discovery.
They ask new questions, collect more evidence and test their ideas in different ways.

Why Does Your Hair Stand Up?
When you rub a balloon on your hair, something invisible is happening — electric charges are moving.
Rubbing the balloon against your hair can transfer tiny negatively charged particles called electrons from your hair to the balloon. The balloon gains extra negative charge, while your hair is left more positively charged. This build-up of charge is called static electricity.
Now something interesting happens.
Many of the hairs on your head have the same type of charge. Charges that are alike repel, which means they push away from each other. Each hair tries to move away from the hairs beside it — making your hair spread out and stand on end.
The charged balloon can also attract your hair. This is why your hair may reach towards the balloon even when the balloon isn't touching it.
Does It Always Work the Same Way?
Not necessarily! Static electricity can be affected by the materials you use and even the air around you.
Try rubbing the balloon for different lengths of time, or compare dry hair, wool, fur or other materials. You may discover that some combinations produce a much stronger effect than others.
That gives you another question to investigate: what conditions create the strongest static charge?
