Essy

Hair-Raising Science

Essy loves going to the playground.

One afternoon, after racing down the slippery slide over and over again, she noticed something strange.


When she reached the bottom, her hair was sticking up in every direction!

Then her friend reached out to help her up...


Zap!


They both felt a tiny electric shock.

Essy looked back at the slide.

"There aren't any batteries... there aren't any power cords... so where did the electricity come from?"


That question stayed in her mind all the way back to the Crazy Scientist LAB.

Professor Picklebottom smiled.

"I think we can build an investigation to find out."

  • Slid down a slippery playground slide and felt your hair sticking up?

  • Taken off a jumper and heard little crackling sounds?

  • Had a balloon stick to a wall after a party?

  • Seen someone else's hair suddenly float upwards?

Those strange things all happen because of the same invisible force.

Today you're going to investigate it yourself.

What did you discover?

When you rubbed the balloon, something invisible changed.

Without touching anything, the balloon could:

  • Lift hair.

  • Pull individual strands.

  • Make hair stand up.

You weren't using magnets.

You weren't using glue.

So...

What was pulling the hair?

Scientists call this invisible effect static electricity.

The same invisible force can happen in everyday life.

  • Rubbed a balloon on your shirt and made it stick to a wall?

They're all caused by static electricity.

Now you'll start spotting it everywhere!

Think Like a Scientist

Scientists don't just do ONE experiment; they change one part of the experiment (independent variable) and then see how it affects another part of the experiment

(dependent variable)

Change ONE variable and test again.
