Dr Puddledrip has returned from a dangerous expedition with a tiny sample of genuine Dragon Snot. It isn't sticky like glue slime. Instead, it forms long, gooey strands that wobble, drip and hold together like a giant dragon sneeze!

Meet the Dragon Potions

Dr Puddledrip has prepared two mysterious dragon potions.
Dragon Potion A is bright red and smells delicious.
Dragon Potion B looks just like ordinary water.
Look carefully at both potions before you begin.

Make Dragon Potion A

Fill a jug with 2 cups of warm water.
Add 1 teaspoon of sodium alginate powder.
Use a stick blender or electric mixer to blend the mixture until the powder has completely dissolved.
Now add 1 packet of red jelly crystals and mix again until the colour is even.
Your Dragon Potion A is now ready.
Do you think the jelly crystals are helping to make the Dragon Snot... or are they simply adding colour and flavour?

Make Dragon Potion B

Pour 2 cups of water into a clear plastic container.
Add 2 teaspoons of calcium chloride granules.
Stir until all the white granules disappear.
This is your Dragon Pool.

Make the Dragon Snot

Slowly pour Dragon Potion A into the Dragon Pool.
Watch very carefully as it touches the water.
Don't stir it.
Look closely to see where the Dragon Snot begins to form.

Catch Your Dragon Snot

Carefully lift the Dragon Snot out of the Dragon Pool using your fingers or a spoon.
Place it into a bowl of clean water and gently rinse it.
Now it's ready to investigate... and taste!

Rinse, Observe and Taste

Carefully lift your Dragon Snot out of the Dragon Pool.
Place it into a bowl of clean water and gently rinse away any extra Dragon Pool solution.
Now hold it in your hand.

wondered why some foods are runny while others are wobbly?
Some materials stay as liquids.
Others can suddenly change into soft gels.
Today you'll investigate one of the strangest materials of all...
Dragon Snot.

Before anyone explained how Dragon Snot formed...
You investigated it yourself.
You made predictions.
You compared two mysterious dragon potions.
You watched carefully as the goo began to form.
You observed where it appeared first.
With every observation, you collected another clue about what was really happening.
Now it's time to put those clues together and solve the mystery.

Your investigation revealed something surprising.
Neither dragon potion created the Dragon Snot on its own.
The transformation only happened when the two potions touched each other.
So why did this happen?
One of the dragon potions contained long molecules called polymers. These long chains floated freely through the liquid.
When the polymers touched the calcium solution, tiny calcium ions acted like little bridges, joining the polymer chains together.
As more and more connections formed, the liquid changed into a soft gel that held together as one long gooey strand.
That's why you could lift the Dragon Snot out of the bowl instead of it simply mixing into the water.
Scientists call these tiny connections cross-links.

Why did your Dragon Potion turn into Dragon Snot?
At first, your Dragon Potion could flow almost like an ordinary liquid.
But hidden inside it was sodium alginate, a natural substance made from brown seaweed.
When the Dragon Potion touched the Dragon Pool, the sodium alginate met calcium ions in the solution.
The calcium began connecting the long alginate molecules together.
Instead of staying runny, the liquid changed into a soft, stretchy gel — Dragon Snot!
What is sodium alginate?
Sodium alginate is a natural material that comes from brown seaweed.
Its molecules are extremely long, so sodium alginate belongs to a group of materials called polymers.
You can imagine these polymer molecules as lots of tiny flexible chains mixed throughout the liquid.
While the chains can move past one another, the Dragon Potion can still flow.
What happens when alginate meets calcium?
The Dragon Pool contains calcium ions.
When the alginate chains meet calcium, the calcium begins joining different chains together.
These connections are called cross-links.
You can imagine the calcium acting like tiny bridges connecting one long alginate chain to another.
Why does the liquid turn into a gel?
As more cross-links form, the alginate chains become connected into a network.
This network traps lots of water inside it.
The water has not disappeared, but it can no longer flow as freely.
That is why the runny Dragon Potion changes into a soft, slippery gel.
This process is called cross-linking.
Did you make a new material?
Your Dragon Snot behaved very differently from the liquid you started with.
It could wobble, stretch and hold its shape.
The colour and flavour may have stayed the same, but the material now had very different properties.
Scientists describe properties as things such as how stretchy, strong, soft, hard or absorbent a material is.
By observing these changes, you collected evidence that changing how molecules are connected can change how a material behaves.
Do scientists really use alginate?
Yes!
Alginate is used in much more than Dragon Snot.
Because it can form soft gels and hold water, scientists use alginate in areas including food, medicine and medical dressings.
Scientists and engineers can change the ingredients and conditions to create gels with different properties.
