Rockets can carry astronauts into space.


But could you launch a rocket using nothing more than a small plastic canister and a fizzy tablet?

Somewhere inside the canister, something is building.


You can’t see it.

You can’t stop it.

And when the pressure becomes too much…

BLAST OFF!


Your mission is to discover what is happening inside the rocket and what controls how high it launches.

Have you ever shaken a bottle of soft drink and watched the lid fly off?


Or opened a fizzy drink and heard the gas escape?

Something invisible was building inside.

Rockets use a similar idea.


Before you launch your rocket:

What do you think is building inside the canister?

Why do you think there is a delay before launch?


Record your prediction before testing your ideas.

Watch carefully after sealing the lid.

  • Does the rocket launch instantly?

  • What clues tell you something is happening inside before lift-off?

  • What do you notice about the delay before launch?

  • What do you think is building inside the canister?

  • What might change if you used more water or a larger tablet?

Scientists often study things they cannot see directly.

In this experiment, something invisible is building inside the rocket.


As more of it is produced, the forces inside the canister change.

Eventually, the lid can no longer stay attached.


The sudden release creates enough force to launch the rocket upward.


Engineers use similar ideas when designing:

  • rockets

  • pressure cookers

  • aerosol cans

  • airbags

Understanding how pressure builds and is released helps scientists create safer and more effective technology.

Think Like a Scientist

Scientists don't just do ONE experiment; they change one part of the experiment (independent variable) and then see how it affects another part of the experiment

(dependent variable)

Change ONE variable and test again.

The Science Behind It

What is building inside?
  • The tablet begins reacting with the water almost immediately.

  • Tiny bubbles form throughout the liquid. These bubbles are carbon dioxide gas.

At first, there aren’t enough bubbles to do much.

But something is changing every second.


Why doesn’t it launch immediately?


The lid holds the canister closed.

As more gas is produced, it becomes trapped inside.

The pressure slowly increases.


Eventually, the force pushing on the lid becomes stronger than the lid can hold.

Then the rocket launches.


Why does the rocket move upward?


When the lid suddenly releases, gas rushes downward out of the canister.

The canister moves in the opposite direction.

Scientists use the same idea to explain how rockets travel through space.

NASA rockets burn thousands of kilograms of fuel every second.

If our tiny rocket works using pressure and escaping gas…
